The House of Representative Committee on Sports has attributed the problem of Nigerian sports on the inability of the Presidency to appoint a competent professional as the minister of sports, insisting that as long as incompetent persons continue to occupy the position, our sports would continue to be in the doldrums.
A member of the Committee from Kano, Hon. Engr. Muhammed AG Wudil, who made the assertion while fielding questions from Daily Sunsports at the National Assembly during the recent interaction with sports stakeholders, lamented that President Goodluck Jonathan, who is an apostle of continuity, had failed to appoint professionals to handle the Sports Ministry.
Enumerating the factors that contributed to the problems Nigerian sports, especially football is facing currently, the honourable member said: “We have to look into the inconsistency in the appointment of sports ministers in the country.
“It’s too bad that we change the sports minister almost every six months. A minister will come with new ideas, only for another person to come and change those ideas within months.
“It’s disturbing that a country like a relatively unknown football-playing country like Gabon should be ahead of us in football development. The constant change of ministers has made it impossible for us to institutionalise continuity in the system.
“President Goodluck Jonathan is an apostle of continuity, yet we keep changing sports ministers quite often. Sports is a key issue in our national life that we really need a thorough professional to it. You cannot be a minister of justice without being a lawyer.
